About the Environmental Fellows Program
The Harvard University Center for the Environment created the Environmental Fellows Program to help recent doctorate recipients use and expand Harvard’s resources while addressing complex environmental issues.
Fellows work with Harvard faculty members in any school or department. The programme also aims to strengthen connections between researchers across the University.
HUCE organizes a co-curricular programme for the fellows. Participants join biweekly dinners with other fellows, Harvard faculty, and a Harvard faculty speaker.

Eligibility Criteria
The Environmental Fellows Program is open to applicants with a doctorate or comparable terminal degree awarded between May 2023 and August 2027.
Candidates from a wide range of academic backgrounds may be considered. The programme notes that recipients and hosts may have backgrounds in areas including:

• Government
• Public policy
• Public health
• Medicine
• Design
• Humanities
Interdisciplinary research projects are encouraged but are not required. Applicants interested in research within a single discipline are also encouraged to apply.
Harvard candidates who are receiving terminal degrees from Harvard and postdoctoral researchers currently working at Harvard are eligible under specific conditions. Their proposed research and host arrangements must take them in substantially new directions from their previous work and create new connections within the University.
Research Proposal and Selection Criteria
Project proposals are evaluated by a committee of HUCE faculty.
The proposed project should:
• Represent an independent line of inquiry
• Extend clearly beyond the candidate’s PhD work
• Extend beyond the host’s ongoing research
• Demonstrate relevance to environmental issues
The selection process also considers the applicant’s previous academic and professional success, potential contribution to scholarship or practice, and potential for intellectual achievement.
The committee plans to select fellows whose interests, skills, and backgrounds complement the existing group of Environmental Fellows.

Finding a Harvard Faculty Host
Potential applicants should identify and establish a relationship with a Harvard faculty member who can host their research.
The host serves as a mentor and provides:
✓ Office space
✓ Basic administrative support
Successful candidates are expected to receive strong support from their proposed host.
Each applicant’s host must submit a letter of support of no more than two pages. The letter should explain the host’s level of commitment to both the proposed research and the applicant.
Harvard faculty members from any discipline may potentially serve as hosts, regardless of whether they have previous experience with environmental research or the Harvard University Center for the Environment.
A faculty member may host only one Environmental Fellow at a time.
The official page lists Charles Davis, Charles Taylor, Scott Edwards, Le Xie, Robin Kelsey, and Phillip Deloria as ineligible to host fellows in 2027. Richard Lazarus and Joyce Chaplin have also indicated that they cannot serve as faculty hosts for this programme.

Selection Process
Applicants are assessed on several factors, including their academic and professional record, research proposal, potential contribution, and proposed host arrangement.
The host faculty member’s commitment is also an important consideration. The selection committee considers the host’s enthusiasm for the project, ability to mentor the fellow, and ability to provide an appropriate working environment.
A select group of applicants will be invited to discuss their proposal with the selection committee through a video interview.
