About the International Affairs Junior Fellowship

The International Affairs Junior Fellowship gives new college graduates an opportunity to work on international economic policy within Treasury’s Office of International Affairs.

Junior Fellows gain exposure to multiple policy areas while developing analytical and professional skills. Their work may include:

• Developing policy proposals
• Analyzing international economic and financial developments
• Conducting analytical studies
• Supporting bilateral and multilateral meetings for senior Treasury officials

Fellows may support engagements with counterparts at institutions and groups including the IMF, World Bank, G7, and G20. They may also participate in meetings and have opportunities to travel abroad.

Fellowship Roles and Policy Areas

Junior Fellows are placed in either a regional or functional office.

Regional offices oversee Treasury’s engagement with counterpart finance ministries and treasuries around the world.

Functional offices oversee Treasury’s engagement with international financial institutions and contribute to broader policy areas such as:

• International trade
• Export credits
• Foreign exchange
• International financial policy

The fellowship is structured as a professional role, and Junior Fellows are usually hired at the GS-9 level with standard Treasury benefits.

Eligibility and Qualifications

Strong candidates will have recently received, or will soon receive, a bachelor’s degree.

Relevant coursework may include:

• Economics
• Public policy
• Finance
• International relations
• Related fields

Due to the structure of the programme, preference is given to undergraduates.

Candidates must also:

• Hold U.S. citizenship and be able to provide documentation
• Demonstrate 52 weeks, or 2,080 hours, of relevant experience
• Be able to obtain and maintain a national security clearance

The qualifying experience may include paid work, unpaid work, volunteering, or extracurricular activities relevant to the fellowship duties.

Required Application Materials

Candidates must prepare the following documents:

• Cover letter
• Resume
• One recommendation letter
• Transcript or transcripts demonstrating academic qualifications and career potential

The resume must not exceed two pages.

Applicants should describe the duties performed for each professional or extracurricular activity. They should also include the dates of participation and the number of hours worked per week.

Candidates who pass the first round of screening will be asked to respond to two short essay questions.

Applications are scheduled to be evaluated in December 2026. Selected Fellows are expected to begin in summer 2027, or at another mutually agreed time.

The Treasury Junior Fellows recruiting committee also plans to host three information sessions before the final application deadline. Current fellows from different International Affairs offices will lead the sessions and answer questions about their experiences.
