About the Andreas Tietze Memorial Fellowship 2027
The Department of Near Eastern Studies established the fellowship in memory of Austrian Turcologist Andreas Tietze. The annual programme supports promising researchers working on specific topics in Turkish Studies at the University of Vienna.
Projects requiring a research stay in Vienna are particularly welcomed. The Department also encourages projects that complement or expand its current research focus.
Relevant areas include:
• Environmental history
• History of technology
• Digital humanities
• Consumption history
• History of tourism
• Cultural heritage
However, applications are not limited to these areas. Candidates who plan to work on external research grant proposals may also apply.

Fellowship Benefits
Selected fellows receive academic facilities and financial support during their stay in Vienna.

The monthly scholarship is intended to cover living expenses in Vienna. The Department of Near Eastern Studies does not reimburse travel expenses to and from Vienna.
Fellowship Duration and Start Dates
The fellowship lasts between one and three months.
Selected fellows are expected to begin their fellowship on one of the following dates:
• 1 March 2027
• 1 May 2027
• 1 September 2027
• 1 November 2027
During the fellowship, participants are expected to reside in Vienna and actively participate in the academic life of the Department. They must also present their research project through an academic format such as a public lecture, discussion session, seminar participation, or similar event.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
• Be an advanced doctoral candidate with ABD status, or a postdoctoral/early-stage researcher.
• Postdoctoral applicants must have received their PhD no more than five years ago.
• Have a high level of proficiency in English.
• Submit an original research project.
Knowledge of German is considered an advantage.

• Cover letter explaining where the applicant plans to submit a research funding application and how the project fits the Department’s research interests, mission, and goals
• Curriculum vitae with previous academic achievements and publications, limited to two pages
• Project outline describing the research project, methodology, and sources, between three and five pages
• Names and contact information of two references
Recommendation letters are not required at the application stage. Applications may be written in English or German.
