The USTC Research Internship Program gives graduate students and third- or fourth-year undergraduate students the opportunity to participate in research projects at the University of Science and Technology of China. Internships last from three months to one year. USTC also offers limited fellowship support to outstanding applicants, with different levels covering tuition, insurance, accommodation, and monthly stipends.

About the USTC Research Internship Program

The USTC Research Internship Program allows eligible students to participate in research projects at the university. The programme is designed to provide practical research experience across a variety of cutting-edge research areas.

Participants can work in state-of-the-art laboratories under the guidance of USTC professors. The programme also allows students to build relationships with faculty members and students while developing their research capabilities.

Interns may also apply for a free Chinese language and culture class. The class introduces basic Chinese language and provides opportunities to explore Hui culture.

USTC Fellowship and Financial Coverage

USTC offers a limited number of scholarships to outstanding students. All applicants are evaluated for the available fellowship support.

Three USTC Fellowship levels are listed for the Research Internship Program.

USTC Fellowship Level A

Level A includes:

✓ Tuition waiver
✓ Comprehensive medical insurance
✓ Free university dormitory
✓ Monthly stipend

The monthly stipend is:

• Bachelor’s students: 2,500 RMB per month
• Master’s students: 3,000 RMB per month
• PhD students: 3,500 RMB per month

On-campus accommodation for Level A students is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

USTC Fellowship Level B

Level B includes:

✓ Tuition waiver
✓ Comprehensive medical insurance
✓ Free university dormitory

Level B students are also offered on-campus accommodation on a first-come, first-served basis.

USTC Fellowship Level C

Level C provides:

✓ Tuition waiver

Level C students need to arrange off-campus accommodation. USTC states that assistance will be provided with finding housing.

Programme Costs

Applicants who do not receive applicable fellowship coverage should consider the programme costs listed by USTC.

For undergraduate and Master’s students, tuition is:

• 2,160 RMB per month
• 13,000 RMB per half year
• 26,000 RMB per year

For PhD students, tuition is:

• 2,660 RMB per month
• 16,000 RMB per half year
• 32,000 RMB per year

International student dormitory fees range from 500 to 1,000 RMB per month, depending on room type and size.

Insurance costs 160 RMB per month.

After acceptance, admitted students are notified to pay tuition online. Official admission documents are sent by email after tuition payment is confirmed.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements stated by USTC:

• Be a non-Chinese citizen with a foreign passport.
• Be between 18 and 40 years old.
• Be in good health.
• Be currently enrolled full-time in undergraduate Year 3 or 4, a Master’s programme, or a doctoral programme.
• Have no criminal record.
• Have a good command of English.

Internship Duration

The USTC Research Internship Program can last from:

3 months to 1 year.

The exact period depends on the applicant’s internship arrangements.

Application Periods and Deadlines

Applicants seeking USTC Fellowship Level A must complete the online application during the following periods:

January 1–March 31 for the fall semester
July 1–September 30 for the spring semester

Applicants seeking USTC Fellowship Level B or Level C, as well as self-financed applicants, must complete the online application procedures at least three months before their intended starting date at USTC.

Application Process

Applications are completed through the USTC online application system.

Applicants should:

• Access the official online application platform.
• Register for an account.
• Select Non-degree program.
• Choose Research Internship.
• Complete the application form.
• Upload the requested documents, including all fields marked as required.
• Submit the completed online application.

Visa, Insurance, and Accommodation

Admitted students must use the Visa Application Form, either JW201 or JW202, together with the Admission Notice to apply for a student visa at a Chinese Embassy or Consulate.

Students must enter China with the appropriate student visa and ensure that it remains valid throughout their stay.

International students must also purchase insurance online according to national regulations and university requirements.

Level A and Level B Fellowship recipients are offered on-campus accommodation on a first-come, first-served basis. If university accommodation is full, students must arrange off-campus housing.

Level C Fellowship recipients and self-financed students must arrange off-campus accommodation, although USTC provides assistance with finding housing.

International students living off campus must register with the local police station and provide their residential address and telephone number during registration.
