Applicants may come from any academic field. However, candidates must meet the Academy’s academic, English-language, and broader eligibility requirements.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should meet the qualifications stated by Yenching Academy:
• Hold at least a Bachelor’s degree in any field, or currently be enrolled in a Bachelor’s programme with the expectation of receiving the diploma by August of the intended enrollment year.
• Have an outstanding academic record.
• Demonstrate a strong interest in the interdisciplinary study of China.
• Have a record of extracurricular achievement, community engagement, social responsibility, and leadership potential.
• Demonstrate English proficiency.
Peking University does not allow students to remain enrolled in another degree programme while studying at the university.
For international candidates, applicants must be non-Chinese citizens and hold a valid passport. Former citizens of the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, or Taiwan who have emigrated to another country must meet the additional citizenship-document requirements stated by Peking University.
English Proficiency Requirements
The official admissions page lists the following minimum English-language scores:
• IELTS Academic: Overall 7.0
• TOEFL iBT: Overall 100
• Cambridge English Scale (Advanced): Overall 185
• CET 6: Overall 600
• TEM 4: Pass level of “良好” or above
International applicants whose native language is English, or who have graduated from an English-taught degree programme at undergraduate level or above, are not required to submit an English proficiency test report. However, this exemption does not apply in the same way to applicants from China’s Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Regions, while an English proficiency test report is compulsory for applicants from the Chinese Mainland.
English proficiency tests must have been taken after September 1, 2025. Yenching Academy currently does not accept TOEFL MyBest Scores, TOEFL iBT Home Edition, IELTS Indicator, IELTS Online, or IELTS One Skill Retake.
For IELTS, TOEFL, and Cambridge tests, scores must be sent directly by the testing organization to Yenching Academy of Peking University.

Required Documents
Applicants create an account on the Yenching Academy admissions portal and submit application materials in English.
Required materials include:
• Completed online application form
• Personal statement of 750 words or less
• Statement of Research Interest with a maximum of 1,500 words, excluding citations
• Curriculum Vitae
• Official transcript or transcripts
• Diploma or Certificate of Enrollment
• Two academic letters of recommendation
• Applicable English proficiency documentation
The two academic recommendation letters may be submitted in Chinese or English. Yenching Academy accepts letters written by full professors or associate professors, or equivalent titles, and the professors must be in the applicant’s intended field of study.
Application Process
Candidates may apply through the Yenching Academy online admissions portal. Applicants must create an account, complete the application form, and submit the required materials. Additional application information becomes available through the admissions portal after an account is created.
Students and alumni of Yenching Academy Partner Universities must first participate in their home university’s internal pre-selection process before submitting an application to Yenching Academy.
Candidates from China’s Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Regions must apply through the Yenching Academy application portal and complete a supplementary application through the Peking University Graduate Admissions system.
