About the Berenson Fellowship 2027/2028

The Berenson Fellowship supports scholars whose research explores “Italy in the World.” Projects should examine transnational dialogues between Italy and other cultures during the Renaissance.

For this fellowship, the Renaissance is broadly understood as the period from the 14th to the 17th century.

I Tatti encourages applications from scholars working in:

• Architecture and the arts
• History
• Philosophy
• Literature
• Music
• History of science

Projects may explore connections between Italy and cultures including Latin American, Mediterranean, African, Asian, and other contexts.

Grant and Fellowship Benefits

Selected Berenson Fellows receive financial support and access to I Tatti resources.

Fellows are also expected to participate in the wider I Tatti community through conferences, lectures, concerts, and selected fellowship activities.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the fellowship requirements stated by I Tatti.

• Hold a PhD at the time of application
• Upload a scan of the PhD certificate
• Not be working toward a second PhD
• Work solely on the research project submitted with the application
• Be conversant in English
• Have familiarity with Italian
• Be able to conduct most of the proposed research in Florence

The proposed research may form part of a larger project. However, fellows may not simultaneously work on editing other book or article projects.

Priority is given to early- and mid-career scholars. Applications are welcomed from scholars of all nations, with special consideration given to candidates without regular access to research materials and facilities in Italy.

Fellowship Terms

The Berenson Fellowship is residential. Fellows must live in the Florence area and spend at least three days each week at I Tatti.

Applicants should indicate a preference between:

• Fall: September through December
• Winter-Spring: January through June

Fellows cannot take on other obligations, including part-time teaching, during any part of the fellowship. The Berenson Fellowship also cannot be held at the same time as another fellowship or award.

Term Fellowships at I Tatti can only be held once and cannot be deferred. They are intended for scholars who have not previously held appointments at I Tatti, except Graduate Fellows.

Visa, Health Coverage and Housing Responsibilities

Fellows are responsible for obtaining any required visa, permesso di soggiorno, and health coverage. This responsibility also applies to accompanying family members when relevant.

Applicants receiving a partial salary or outside grants must disclose this information and obtain permission from the Director.

When possible, I Tatti provides an apartment rent free, although fellows are responsible for utility costs. If an apartment is unavailable, a housing subsidy is offered to help with rental expenses.

Application Process

Applications may be written in English or Italian and must be submitted electronically.

Applicants can apply for only one type of I Tatti fellowship during an academic year.

Two scholars who know the applicant’s work well must also submit recommendations online. Applicants are encouraged to register their referees early so they have enough time to complete their recommendations.

Selection Process

Applications are evaluated by international scholars.

The selection committee gives particular attention to:

• The strength of the proposed project
• The project’s potential to produce original results
• The applicant’s curriculum vitae
• The applicant’s ability to contribute collegially to the intellectual life of the Harvard Center
