About the United Nations Regional Course in International Law for Asia-Pacific

The United Nations Regional Course in International Law for Asia-Pacific is organized by the Codification Division of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs.

The 2026 Asia-Pacific course is organized in cooperation with the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.

The course is designed to provide training in international law through seminars and interactive discussions. It also allows participants to exchange experiences and ideas on legal matters in the region.

Course Content

The Regional Courses cover a broad range of core subjects in international law. The Asia-Pacific course includes seminars delivered by international law scholars and practitioners from different regions and legal systems.

The curriculum may include topics such as:

• Introduction to international law
• The law of treaties
• State responsibility
• Diplomatic and consular law
• International peace and security
• Peaceful settlement of international disputes
• International human rights law
• Law of the sea
• International humanitarian law
• International criminal law
• International environmental law
• International trade law
• International investment law
• International law in the Asia-Pacific region

Course Format and Certificate

The course will be conducted through interactive seminars and discussions. Participants are expected to take part in discussions throughout the programme.

A comprehensive set of training materials will be provided to each participant at the beginning of the course.

Certificates are awarded to participants who complete the Regional Course in its entirety.

Benefits and Financial Coverage

For participants receiving a fellowship, the fellowship will cover:

✓ A modest stipend for other living expenses

There will also be a limited number of spaces for self-funded participants.

Self-funded participants must cover all participation-related costs, except training materials. These costs may include travel, medical insurance, accommodation, and living expenses.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the stated qualifications for the Regional Course.

Candidates must:

• Have a legal background with professional experience in the field of international law.
• Be fluent in English.
• Be able to attend the Regional Course in its entirety if selected.
• Be from Member States or the observer State to the United Nations in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Regional Course accommodates up to 26 participants.

Applicants whose mother tongue or language of instruction is not English are required to submit proof of their language abilities and provide a valid language certification.

Selection Process

Participants are selected based on several factors.

The selection process considers:

• The candidate’s qualifications
• The scope of the candidate’s professional duties
• The relevance of the training to the candidate’s professional duties
• Gender balance

Female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

The United Nations does not charge a fee at any stage of the application and selection process. It also does not require information about candidates’ bank accounts.
