About the CEEPUS Scholarship Programme

CEEPUS connects higher education institutions across Central Europe and the Western Balkans. It aims to strengthen academic cooperation between countries that share cultural links and a history of collaboration in higher education.

The programme offers several forms of academic mobility. Participants may study abroad for a semester, attend a summer school, conduct thesis-related research, complete laboratory work, undertake an internship, or teach at a host institution.

CEEPUS also provides network mobility. This format allows universities from at least three countries to collaborate through joint academic and research activities.

CEEPUS Member Countries

The participating countries listed on the official page are:

• Albania
• Austria
• Bosnia and Herzegovina
• Bulgaria
• Croatia
• Czech Republic
• Hungary
• Kosovo
• Moldova
• Montenegro
• North Macedonia
• Poland
• Romania
• Serbia
• Slovakia
• Slovenia

Applicants seeking a CEEPUS scholarship at a Hungarian higher education institution must be enrolled students or teachers at an accredited university or college in another participating country.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following general conditions:

• Be an enrolled student or teacher at an accredited university or college in an eligible CEEPUS member country.
• Student applicants must have completed at least two semesters of study.
• Applicants must not apply for mobility in their home country.
• Applicants must not receive another mobility scholarship covering the same activity, destination, and period.
• Students must follow any additional selection requirements established by their home institution.

Applicants with citizenship different from their country of study or employment may still apply when they are enrolled students or teachers in a CEEPUS member country.

Citizens of a member country who study or teach in a country outside the CEEPUS network are not eligible under the conditions stated on the official page.

For students, study mobility may not exceed a total of ten months during each Bachelor’s and Master’s study cycle.

Student Mobility

Student mobility is available to:

• Bachelor’s students
• Master’s students
• PhD students

The mobility period lasts one semester, normally between three and five months.

During the mobility period, students must attend lectures and seminars and earn academic credits. An internship may supplement these activities.

Applicants must describe their proposed activities in the motivation section of the application. Student mobility applications may be submitted through a CEEPUS network or as Freemover applications.

Short-Term Student Mobility

Short-term student mobility is available to:

• Bachelor’s students currently working on their thesis
• Master’s students currently working on their thesis
• PhD students

The mobility period lasts between one and two months.

Participants must carry out thesis- or dissertation-related activities. These may include:

• Academic consultation
• Research
• Laboratory work

Applicants must explain their thesis or dissertation topic and planned activities in the motivation section. Applications may be submitted through a CEEPUS network or as Freemover applications.

Teacher Mobility

Teacher mobility requires participants to complete teaching or thesis-supervision activities at the host institution.

The main requirements include:

• A minimum stay of five working days
• At least six teaching or supervision hours
• Mobility during an academic semester

Teacher mobility may be completed through a CEEPUS network or as a Freemover.

Research, conference participation, and partner meetings cannot be the only purpose of teacher mobility.

Freemover Mobility

Students and teachers whose institutions do not participate in a CEEPUS network may join the programme as Freemovers.

Freemover applicants must identify and contact a Hungarian host university. They must also obtain a Letter of Acceptance from the host institution.

The official page recommends choosing a Hungarian institution with existing CEEPUS activity to reduce administrative difficulties.

Scholarship Funding in Hungary

CEEPUS partner countries provide funding for the programme. Scholarship holders receive their grant from the host country, and the amount is adjusted to local living standards.

In Hungary, the host university pays the scholarship. Successful applicants receive further information about the payment method and schedule from the host university’s CEEPUS coordinator.

The official page provides access to the current Hungarian scholarship rates through the CEEPUS platform.
