The page also notes that internships must last at least 3 months and no more than 6 months within one internship period, and that the schedule is tentative and subject to change.
The same page states that applications for the Fall 2026 Internship are currently open and that the submission period runs until April 15, 2026.
Eligibility
Eligible applicants include students who are currently enrolled in the last two years of a bachelor’s degree, students enrolled in any year of a master’s degree, and those who have already graduated with a bachelor’s or master’s degree from universities, colleges, junior colleges, and vocational schools in Japan or overseas. Applicants who will be in the final two years of a bachelor’s degree by the start of the proposed internship are also eligible.
Currently enrolled students must have approval from their home institution, and the academic background of applicants must be appropriate to their desired host unit or units at OIST. The internship is intended for those seeking more research experience and considering OIST’s PhD Program later, while current or graduated PhD students are directed to other opportunities such as workshops or careers at OIST.
Research interns from Japanese universities or institutions must arrange and bring their own insurance if accepted. The page says acceptable insurance is the combination of Gakkensai and Gakkenbai, or other insurance with similar coverage.
Application Procedure
OIST accepts application documents online only, and applicants must create an account to apply. All required documents must be prepared in English, saved as PDF files, and uploaded through the application website. Applicants may complete the application in one session or save progress and return later. OIST also recommends using a computer for the online application, and says mobile users should make sure they are using the latest operating system for the website to work properly.
Application Documents
Applicants must prepare the following materials:
• Transcript and diploma: Scanned copies of the current academic transcript and any transcript from past degrees, together with completed diplomas, in PDF format
• Statement of purpose: No more than 400 words or 2500 characters
• Curriculum Vitae (CV): A current CV summarizing academic background, research experience, skills, and accomplishments
• Recommendation letter: 1 to 3 letters in English from professorial-level faculty who know the applicant and can describe the applicant’s academic potential as a researcher
• Passport: Passport number and a scan of the passport photo page
• ID photo: A recent photo taken within the last three months in standard passport orientation
• English proficiency score (optional): IELTS or TOEFL may be uploaded if the applicant believes it strengthens the application
The page adds several document-specific notes. An unofficial transcript or another record of grades may be uploaded. Transcripts not written in English must include an English explanation. Applicants who have not yet graduated and do not have a diploma must upload a certificate of enrollment, preferably showing the expected graduation date.
The statement of purpose must explain how OIST and the desired research unit or units fit the applicant’s expertise and skill set, what the applicant hopes to accomplish at OIST, and how the research internship fits into long-term career plans or aspirations. If applying to multiple research units, the applicant must explain the interest and fit for each one briefly in a single statement.
For recommendation letters, OIST says letters from lab members or postdocs are not eligible. Applicants may submit the application only after at least one recommendation letter has been received in the application system. For passport documents, OIST states that applicants outside Japan must have a valid passport for travel to Japan, and those who do not yet have a passport at the time of application may upload other government-issued identification documents instead.
Application Fee
The application fee for the Research Internship Program is 3,000 JPY. The page states that this fee is non-refundable in all circumstances, and fee waivers are not offered for personal financial situations. It also notes that applicants who have trouble paying because of international sanctions on their country should use the Contact Us page, select “Research Internship” as the reason for contact, and describe their situation.
