CERN is inviting applications for its Doctoral Students for Next Generation Trigger Project 2026 in Geneva, Switzerland. Selected candidates will work on their doctoral thesis for up to 36 months in an environment focused on science, technology, innovation, research, and engineering. The role is set up in collaboration with CERN and the candidate’s home university.

Program Overview

This position is designed for doctoral students whose research connects with CERN’s work in applied physics, engineering, computing, or related technical fields. During the programme, selected candidates will carry out doctoral research, contribute to ongoing projects, present and document their work, and collaborate with scientists, engineers, and technicians in an international and multidisciplinary team. The ideal start date is 1 July 2026, and the job flexibility is listed as hybrid.

What Is Included

✓ A monthly allowance of 3907 Swiss Francs, tax free
✓ 30 days of paid leave per year plus 2 weeks annual closure
✓ Coverage under CERN’s comprehensive Health Insurance scheme, with the contribution automatically deducted from the allowance
✓ Family supplement to the subsistence allowance, depending on individual circumstances
✓ Travel expenses to Geneva upon joining CERN, depending on individual circumstances
✓ A 12-month contract renewable up to 3 years, with the possibility to spread the stay over a maximum of 4 consecutive years to allow time at the university

Eligibility

• Your field of study must be in Applied Physics, Engineering, Computing, or a related area
• You must be motivated to develop your research in a hands-on, collaborative, and innovative environment
• You should enjoy teamwork and learning from others
• You need a solid theoretical foundation in your research area and an interest in practical applications
• You must have good communication skills and be able to work effectively in a multicultural team
• You need a good knowledge of English or French
• Your university must support your participation and agree that your research at CERN will contribute to your PhD thesis
• You must have started or be about to start a doctoral programme in a university
