The SECAI Scholarships support outstanding students who plan to study Artificial Intelligence or an AI-related field at TU Dresden or Leipzig University. The scholarships cover living expenses in Germany, so selected students can focus on their studies, begin their research career, and build a professional network.

Overview

SECAI created these scholarships for students interested in AI as a broad and interdisciplinary field. The official page states that AI involves computer science, engineering, mathematics, social science, law, natural sciences, and application areas such as medicine.

The scholarship is mainly based on academic excellence. However, it also aims to improve internationalization and diversity in AI-related teaching programs. Women in STEM subjects are particularly encouraged to apply. In addition, special personal circumstances may be considered, including systematic disadvantage, prosecution in the home country, or refugee status because of war.

Scholarship Benefits

The SECAI Scholarships provide financial support for living expenses in Germany.

✓ Monthly allowance of EUR 934
✓ Support for the remaining duration of the recipient’s studies, according to the model study plan
✓ Possible monthly family allowance for foreign students
✓ Support designed to help students focus on studies, research, and professional networking

Any extra income must be declared. The scholarship may be reduced by the amount of gross income that exceeds EUR 603.

Duration of Funding

Funding is limited to the remaining duration of the recipient’s studies according to the model study plan. However, the Selection Committee may set a shorter scholarship period based on the available budget, study situation, and progress of the candidate.

If the prerequisites for receiving the scholarship are no longer satisfied, the scholarship ends immediately.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Be highly qualified current or prospective Master’s students
• Have achieved excellent results in Bachelor’s studies
• Pursue Master-level studies in Artificial Intelligence, broadly conceived
• Have a cumulative grade point average of 1.7 or better after conversion to the German grading system
• Currently be, or soon become, Master-level students at TU Dresden or Leipzig University
• Study content closely related to SECAI research areas
• Demonstrate an above-average academic track record

Students applying for a Master’s program may apply for the scholarship in parallel. However, this requires two independent applications.

Eligible Study Areas

The official page lists several related study programs.

• M.Sc. Computer Science at TU Dresden
• M.Sc. Computational Modeling and Simulation at TU Dresden, in Applied Artificial Intelligence and Computational Life Science tracks
• M.Sc. Data Science at Leipzig University
• M.Sc. Nanoelectronic Systems at TU Dresden
• M.Sc. Bioinformatics at Leipzig University
• M.Sc. Medical Informatics at Leipzig University

Students from other programs may also apply if they have specialized in an AI-related topic through elective courses, projects, or thesis topics. Relevant areas include computer science, AI-focused legal studies, human and societal dimensions of AI, socio-technical systems, and human-machine interaction.

Application Process

Applicants must submit the scholarship application through the official application form. Students who are also applying to a Master’s program must complete a separate application for that study program.

The application form also states that this is only an application for the SECAI Scholarship Program. Therefore, it does not replace admission to the relevant study program.
