About the Harpswell Leadership Residents Programme
The Leadership Residency is based at Harpswell’s leadership centers in Phnom Penh. Leadership Residents live alongside Cambodian Women’s Leadership students and alumnae while supporting their academic, leadership, and personal development.
Residents are volunteers who mentor, teach, collaborate with, and support members of the Harpswell community. The programme is also designed to help residents refine their professional interests, develop their leadership style, and engage in hands-on social impact.
Leadership Residents are asked to commit for four to eight months. Terms begin between May and August or between November and February.

Core Responsibilities
Leadership Residents contribute directly to student learning and leadership development.
Core responsibilities include:
• Teaching Harpswell’s Core Curriculum
• Facilitating twice-weekly critical thinking discussions on current events
• Tutoring students in English language skills
• Hosting consistent office hours
• Supporting student leadership development
• Building relationships with students and alumnae
• Planning cultural activities outside the leadership centers

Leadership Residents are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to and from Cambodia.
Residents and Leadership Resident Fellows may also be eligible for optional part-time internships with local NGO partners, providing additional experience in international development work.

Eligibility Criteria
Harpswell welcomes applications from international women with university degrees.
Applicants should demonstrate:
• Commitment to social change, women’s leadership, and education as a tool for empowerment
• Genuine curiosity about other people’s experiences
• Interest in cross-cultural learning and discovery
• Resourcefulness and flexibility
• Ability to self-motivate and work independently
• Excellent spoken and written English
• Willingness to work non-traditional hours, including frequent evenings and weekends
Teaching experience is considered a plus for Leadership Residents.
Harpswell states that it welcomes applicants from diverse racial, ethnic, social, religious, disability, and sexual-orientation backgrounds.
Leadership Resident Fellowship
Harpswell also offers a separate Leadership Resident Fellowship, a 12-month residential position for one young woman who takes on a leadership role within the Leadership Resident programme.
The LR Fellow acts as a peer leader for Leadership Residents and helps ensure that the programme operates effectively. Responsibilities include managing schedules, onboarding new residents, facilitating curriculum activities, building relationships with students and alumnae, and supporting collaboration within the cohort.
The LR Fellow receives:

In addition to the general Leadership Resident qualifications, LR Fellow applicants should have:
• More than two years of professional experience
• Teaching experience strongly preferred

Professional and Cultural Experience
Leadership Residents have opportunities to strengthen professional skills through teaching, mentoring, discussion facilitation, and direct engagement with students.
The residency also provides sustained cultural immersion. Residents live at Harpswell’s leadership centers, participate in Khmer cultural life, and share daily experiences with students and staff.
All Leadership Residents have the opportunity to travel to the provinces for a homestay with a Harpswell student and her family.
