Applications for the 2027 cohort of Yenching Scholars are open for international candidates and applicants from China’s Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan regions. About Yenching Academy
Yenching Academy annually enrolls approximately 120 new students from the Chinese Mainland and abroad. International students make up roughly 75% of the student body.
Applicants are expected to show a strong interest in interdisciplinary study of China. The admissions criteria also consider academic performance, extracurricular achievement, community engagement, social responsibility, leadership potential, and English proficiency.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants should meet the qualifications listed by Yenching Academy.
Candidates should have:
• A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in any field, or be currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s programme and expect to receive their diploma within the required enrollment timeline.
• An outstanding academic record.
• A strong interest in interdisciplinary study of China.
• A record of extracurricular achievement, community engagement, social responsibility, and leadership potential.
• English proficiency.
Peking University does not allow students to be enrolled in other degree programmes while studying at the university.
For international candidates, applicants must be non-Chinese citizens with a valid passport.
Former citizens of the Chinese Mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, or Taiwan who have emigrated to another country must provide valid passport or citizenship documents dating from before April 30, 2021, together with proof of cancellation of Chinese nationality.

Required Application Materials
Applicants create an account through the Yenching Academy admissions portal and submit their application materials in English.
Required materials include:
• Completed online application form
• Personal statement of 750 words or less
• Statement of Research Interest of no more than 1,500 words, excluding citations
• Curriculum Vitae
• Official transcript or transcripts
• Diploma or Certificate of Enrollment
• Two academic letters of recommendation
• Applicable English proficiency documentation
Academic recommendation letters may be submitted in Chinese or English.
Peking University accepts recommendation letters written by full professors, associate professors, or individuals holding equivalent titles. The letters must come from professors in the applicant’s intended field of study.
English Language Requirements
The admissions page lists the following minimum English scores:
• IELTS Academic: Overall 7.0
• TOEFL iBT: Overall 100
• Cambridge English Scale Advanced: Overall 185
• CET 6: Overall 600
• TEM 4: Pass level of “良好” or above
International applicants whose native language is English are not required to provide an English proficiency test report.
International applicants who have graduated from an English-taught undergraduate or higher degree programme are also exempt from submitting an English proficiency test report.
Applicants from China’s Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan regions must provide an English proficiency test report even if they attended or graduated from an English-taught degree programme.
Applicants from the Chinese Mainland must also submit an English proficiency test report.
The admissions page states that accepted English proficiency tests must have been taken after September 1, 2025.
TOEFL MyBest Scores, TOEFL iBT Home Edition, IELTS Indicator, IELTS Online, and IELTS One Skill Retake are not accepted.

Application Process
Candidates may apply through the Yenching Academy online admissions portal.
The general application process includes:
• Create an account on the Yenching Academy admissions portal.
• Complete the online application form.
• Prepare and upload the required application materials.
• Arrange for the required academic recommendation letters.
• Submit applicable English proficiency results according to the stated requirements.
Students and alumni of Yenching Academy Partner Universities must first complete their home university’s internal pre-selection process before submitting their application to Yenching Academy.
Candidates from China’s Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan regions must also complete a supplementary application through the Peking University Graduate Admissions website.
