The Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellows Programme 2027 supports post-doctoral researchers and mid-career policy makers working on big-power relations and their impact on Southeast Asia. The programme is hosted by ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute and focuses on policy-relevant research in international politics and security, regional economics, and digital technology.
Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellows Programme 2027 Overview
The programme honours Professor Wang Gungwu, former Chairman of the Board of Trustees at ISEAS – Yusof Ishak Institute. It recognises his distinguished 17-year tenure at the Institute.
The fellowship aims to build the next generation of scholars and policy makers. Therefore, it focuses on research about big-power relations and their effects on Southeast Asia.
Research Priority Areas
Applicants should work on policy-relevant research connected to the programme’s stated themes.
• Developments in US-China relations and their impact on Southeast Asia
• Asia Pacific security issues, such as the South China Sea and China-ASEAN relations
• Progress and prospects of global or regional economic cooperation initiatives
• Rise of China and its impact on Southeast Asian communities
• Use of digital media and technology by countries to advance interests and influence perceptions in Southeast Asian countries
Fellowship Duration
Fellowships may last for a minimum of two months and up to six months. However, the final duration remains subject to approval by ISEAS.
Successful applicants must stay in residence at ISEAS for the duration of the fellowship.
Benefits and Support
The fellowship provides financial and institutional support during the stay at ISEAS.

✓ Meeting with Professor Wang Gungwu during the fellowship, where possible
✓ Access to office space, computer equipment, and IT services
✓ Access to the ISEAS Library and other ISEAS facilities, where appropriate
Expected Outputs
Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellows must contribute to ISEAS Perspective and ISEAS Fulcrum publications in their research area. In addition, fellows must speak at an in-house seminar on their research findings.
Fellows also become part of a network of regional scholars. Moreover, they are welcome to contribute to ISEAS after the fellowship.
Eligibility Criteria
The programme is intended for specific applicant groups.
• Post-doctoral researchers may apply
• Mid-career policy makers may apply
• Mid-career policy makers without a Ph.D. or equivalent degree may also apply
• Their CV or resume must show suitable professional experience and research interest
