The IWW Writers-in-Residence Programme 2027 invites interested writers to join a four-week residency at Hong Kong Baptist University. The programme is organized by the International Writers’ Workshop and will end with the IWW Literary Festival under the theme “Inheritance.” Applicants may address how their work connects to the theme, although this is not required.

Overview

Founded in 2004, the International Writers’ Workshop at Hong Kong Baptist University has hosted more than 150 writers from over 60 countries. The 2027 residency will run from 26 February 2027 to 25 March 2027.

The programme will culminate in the IWW Literary Festival. Therefore, selected writers must be available for the full residency period and the festival activities.

What IWW Provides

The International Writers’ Workshop provides the following support:

✓ Roundtrip economy class airfare
✓ Accommodation on HKBU’s campus for four weeks
✓ A per diem

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Have at least one published literary book with a press
• Self-published books are not eligible
• Currently reside outside Hong Kong
• Have a functional command of English or Chinese, including Mandarin or Cantonese

Residency Requirements

Selected writers must take part in the full residency. In addition, they are expected to attend key programme activities.

• Attend the entire residency from 26 February 2027 to 25 March 2027
• Attend the Welcome Ceremony during the first week
• Participate in the Literary Festival during the final week
• Writers are encouraged to share a piece of writing connected to the Literary Festival theme

Application Requirements

Applicants must prepare the following materials:

• A one-page, single-spaced Artist’s Statement in English or Chinese
• If the Artist’s Statement is in Chinese, include a one-paragraph English summary
• 10–12 pages of recent work
• A Chinese or English translation if the original work is not in English or Chinese
• A CV or resume
• Contact information, including email addresses, for two referees
• All application materials must use 12-point type and 1-inch margins

Recent work may include creative nonfiction, digital writing, drama, fiction, graphic forms, libretti, or poetry.
