The CSEAS Fellowship 2027 is a visiting scholarship opportunity at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto University. It is designed for accomplished scholars who want to spend time in Kyoto to conduct research, write, and develop scholarly work connected to their field of study. CSEAS presents the fellowship as part of a long-running visiting scholarship program supported by substantial scholarly resources and a multidisciplinary academic environment.

CSEAS Fellowship 2027 Overview

CSEAS states that its visiting scholarship program has been in place since 1975. According to the page, more than 450 researchers have used the Center’s resources for multidisciplinary research and for developing comparative, historical, and global perspectives on Southeast Asia. The Center says it welcomes scholars and researchers working on comparative and regional issues from a multi-area perspective.

The fellowship is awarded on a competitive basis, and fourteen fellowships are awarded annually. Fellowship terms run for three to six months. For the 2027 call, the page lists five fellowships, including one librarian position, and shows availability from March 1, April 1, May 1, and June 1, 2027. CSEAS also notes that it may offer a different period than the one proposed by the applicant because of slot availability.

What the Fellowship Covers

Successful applicants receive financial support in several areas. CSEAS says the fellowship provides an appropriate stipend for international travel and living expenses in Kyoto. It also provides research funds, and domestic travel funds may be allocated subject to government regulations. In addition, Visiting Research Scholars are treated as employees of Kyoto University and are therefore subject to some University regulations.

Applicants must meet the following conditions:

• They must be accomplished scholars of high standing.
• They must be under 65 years of age at the time of appointment.
• Applicants over 65 are considered only in exceptional cases.
• Applicants without a PhD are not eligible unless they have prior approval from a CSEAS faculty member to act as their counterpart.
• Current graduate degree students and postdoctoral researchers are not eligible.
• Only experienced librarians may apply for the library position.
• Previous CSEAS fellows may apply again only after six years have passed since the completion of their earlier fellowship.
