The Taiwan Fellowship 2027 supports foreign experts and scholars who want to conduct advanced research at universities or academic institutions in Taiwan. The fellowship focuses on research related to Taiwan, cross-strait relations, the Asia-Pacific region, mainland China, and Sinology.
Taiwan Fellowship 2027 Overview
The MOFA Taiwan Fellowship was established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan). It encourages overseas scholars in the social sciences and humanities to pursue advanced research in Taiwan.
The fellowship also echoes the APEC Scholarship Initiative. Each year, it provides 12 Chinese Taipei APEC Fellowship openings for scholars and experts from developing APEC economies. Up to 2026, more than 1,500 scholars from 93 countries had been accepted by the program.
Research Fields
Applicants should propose a topic in the social sciences or humanities. The topic should relate to one of the stated areas.

Fellowship Benefits
The Taiwan Fellowship provides monthly support, travel subsidy, and insurance coverage.
✓ Monthly grant of NT$60,000 for professors, associate professors, research fellows, or associate research fellows
✓ Monthly grant of NT$50,000 for assistant professors, assistant research fellows, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, doctoral program students, and other candidates recommended by ROC missions
✓ One direct round-trip economy-class ticket subsidy between the recipient’s country of residence and Taiwan
✓ Group accident insurance during the research term in Taiwan
✓ Accident insurance coverage of NT$1 million
✓ Accident injury medical benefits of NT$50,000
Airfare Subsidy Limits
The ticket subsidy is based on the actual ticket price. However, the official guidelines also list maximum subsidy amounts by region.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the fellowship’s academic and professional requirements.
• Must be foreign nationals
• Must be professors, associate professors, assistant professors, post-doctoral researchers, doctoral candidates, or doctoral program students at related departments of overseas universities
• Research fellows at an equivalent level in academic institutions abroad may also apply
• Candidates recommended by ROC overseas missions may apply if their field covers Taiwan’s foreign relations or cross-strait relations
• Applicants currently conducting research, teaching, or studying in Taiwan are not eligible
Required Documents
Applicants should prepare the required application materials before submission.

• Resume, including a publication list
• Research proposal, three pages in principle, using a standard research format
• Two letters of recommendation, or one recommendation letter and one letter of consent from the chief administrator of the applicant’s institution
• Valid colored passport copy for the online application
• Employment letter and proof of salary when required for stipend-level review
Application Process
Applicants must first complete the online application form. The form can be filled out in English or Chinese. Before submission, applicants should upload the required digital documents.
After online submission, applicants must print the completed application form. They must then send the form and official copies of all application documents to the ROC Embassy or Representative Office by post. The valid postmark date is 1 July 2026.
Selection Process
The ROC Embassy or Representative Office receives the application, verifies the information, and evaluates the applicant’s academic influence or potential. It also provides recommendation comments for the evaluation committee.
Then, MOFA invites scholars, experts, and MOFA representatives to form an evaluation committee. Candidates will be informed by email. After that, candidates must contact universities or research institutions in Taiwan and obtain a Letter of Consent for Research.
Candidates must send the Letter of Consent to the Taiwan Fellowship team by 31 December. Finally, they receive a Grant Authorization Letter and become officially recognized recipients.
Fellowship Conditions
Recipients must follow the approved research proposal and research area. Any change requires MOFA approval.
In addition, recipients must submit written research findings of at least 20 pages to the Center for Chinese Studies within three months after the program ends. They must also attend academic seminars and relevant activities held by MOFA and commissioned organizers during their stay in Taiwan.
