The Residential Volunteer Programme gives participants practical experience supporting young people through outdoor activities at Scout Adventures centres.
Volunteers work as Outdoor Activity Instructors. Scout Adventures provides training to help participants deliver activity sessions to young people visiting its centres.
The programme welcomes applications from the UK, Europe, and other countries.
For the 2026–2027 cycle, the available placements are:
• September 2026 to September 2027
• January 2027 to November 2027
The September 2026 placement is currently limited to UK and European applicants because of visa timeframes.
What Volunteers Will Do
Participants become part of the teams delivering outdoor experiences to young people at Scout Adventures centres.
Their main responsibilities can include:
• Delivering outdoor activity sessions
• Supporting young people during activities
• Welcoming guests to the centres
• Helping with reception activities
• Supporting kitchen or shop operations when required
• Helping keep the centres clean and operational
Volunteers commit to an average of approximately 35 hours per week across five days. The schedule can include evenings and weekends.

Training and Professional Development
The programme starts with an initial training course, usually at Gilwell Park.
The initial course lasts around five days and provides practical preparation before participants move to their assigned adventure centre.

Accommodation
Residential volunteers live at their allocated Scout Adventures centre.
Accommodation is provided indoors and is generally shared with another volunteer. Shared facilities can include living spaces, television, broadband, and board games, although facilities vary between centres.
All meals are provided during the placement, including on working days and days off.
Volunteers normally receive two days off each week. Additional time off may sometimes be possible when centres are quieter.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants for the Residential Volunteer Programme should:
• Be aged 18 or above.
• Be aged 30 or under when the placement begins.
• Have previous experience in Scouting and/or working with young people.
• Be able to communicate effectively in English.
• Be willing to support and help others.
• Be prepared to learn new skills and gain practical experience.
• Be willing to work as part of a team.
• Be able to commit to the requirements of the residential placement.
The programme is designed for individual participants. Partners, children, and family members cannot be accommodated as part of the placement.
Required Application Materials
Applicants must complete the online application form and prepare the required supporting materials.
These include:
• Membership confirmation from the applicant’s National Scout or Guide Organisation, if currently a Scout or Guide
• A reference or recommendation letter from a school, university, or employer
• A photograph
• A short two-minute video introducing the applicant
Applicants are also asked to provide details of someone who can give a character reference.
The referee should be an adult who is not a relative. Suitable referees can include Scout leaders, teachers, or sports coaches.
Selection Process
After receiving the completed application and recommendation, Scout Adventures reviews the submitted information.
Suitable applicants are invited to an online interview.
The interview normally lasts approximately 15–20 minutes and gives Scout Adventures an opportunity to learn more about the applicant. Candidates can also ask questions about the placement.
Successful applicants then receive further information about their placement and arrival arrangements.
Visa and Travel Information
Scout Adventures helps overseas volunteers who require a visa by providing a Certificate of Sponsorship.
However, volunteers are responsible for applicable immigration and travel costs.
Depending on individual circumstances, these may include:
• Charity Worker visa costs
• Immigration Health Surcharge
• TB testing where required
• Personal travel to and from the UK
• Appropriate travel or personal insurance
Scout Adventures states that participants are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from the UK.
On designated arrival days, the programme can arrange collection from specified airports, railway stations, or bus stations for travel to the initial training location.
