About the Kader Asmal Fellowship Programme 2027

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants for the Kader Asmal Fellowship Programme must meet the following conditions:
• Be a resident national of South Africa.
• Have at least two years of substantial work experience directly related to the proposed programmes of study.
• Hold a bachelor’s-level qualification from an accredited and government-recognised higher education institution.
• Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
• Have a first-class honour or second-class honour, Grade 1.
• A second-class honour, Grade 2 may be accepted when the applicant has substantial directly relevant work experience.
• Have received the bachelor’s qualification in 2015 or later.
• Not already hold a master’s-level or higher qualification.
• Not currently be undertaking a master’s-level or higher programme.
• Not be due to begin a master’s-level or higher programme during the 2026/2027 academic year.
• Plan to begin a new master’s programme in Ireland no sooner than August 2027.
• Be available to take up the fellowship during the 2027/2028 academic year.
Applicants must demonstrate leadership abilities and aspirations. They must also show a commitment to achieving the SDGs in South Africa and contributing to positive relationships with Ireland.
Candidates must not have applied to the Ireland Fellows Programme on more than one previous occasion.
Programme Selection Requirements
Applicants must identify and select three eligible programmes relevant to their academic and professional backgrounds.
Candidates must understand the academic and English-language requirements for each selected programme. The proposed courses should also align with their previous education, professional experience, and future objectives.
The fellowship covers the selected recipient only. Financial support and visas for spouses or dependants are not included within the programme’s scope.

Application Process
The Kader Asmal Fellowship Programme uses a three-stage application process:
• Stage 1: Preliminary application
• Stage 2: Detailed application
• Stage 3: Interviews

English Language Requirements
Irish higher education institutions require a high level of English proficiency. English-language testing is required for admission to Irish higher education institutions and for visa applications.
Applicants who pass Stage 1 but do not hold the required English-language certification will take the Duolingo English Test.
However, some selected courses or institutions may not accept the Duolingo English Test. In those cases, shortlisted candidates or reserve candidates must take an IELTS examination in January 2027.
