About the IRIS@NUS Research Internship

IRIS@NUS provides students with an immersive research experience at the National University of Singapore. Participants join NUS laboratories or research groups and work under the mentorship of NUS faculty members.

The programme allows students to contribute to ongoing projects and gain hands-on experience with research facilities at NUS. It is also designed to give participants exposure to graduate-level research and future graduate study possibilities.

The exact internship length depends on the selected project and the availability of the principal investigator. The programme runs for two or three months within January to May 2027, and participants must be able to commit to the full period they select.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements published by NUS Graduate School:

• Have a minimum overall or major GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
• Be enrolled full-time in a degree-granting undergraduate or master’s programme.
• Maintain student status at the home university throughout the IRIS@NUS programme.
• Undergraduate applicants must have completed at least two years of undergraduate study by the programme start date.
• Have a genuine interest in academic research.
• Current NUS students are not eligible.

The programme welcomes students from all fields across ASEAN and around the world. However, the selection criteria state that priority will be given to ASEAN applicants.

Required Documents

Applicants need to prepare the following materials:

• Academic transcript
• Detailed CV of no more than two A4 pages
• Personal statement describing previous academic and research experiences, with a focus on research interests
• Two letters of recommendation

Previous research experience is not mandatory for the personal statement. The official page states that applicants may still apply if they do not have prior research experience.

The two recommendation letters must be received by 6 September 2026. NUS recommends obtaining them from faculty members or supervisors who can comment specifically on the applicant’s academic potential and research preparation.

Selection Process

NUS lists three main considerations in the selection process:

Applications are submitted through the NUS Graduate Admission System (GDA3).

Applicants should:

• Access the Graduate Admission System.
• Add a new programme.
• Select “Non-Degree Program” and “Full-Time.”
• Choose enrollment in January 2027.
• Select the Internship and Research Immersion in Singapore (IRIS) @ NUS Program.
• Complete the required sections.
• Upload all necessary supporting documents.
• Submit the application through the system.
