About the OIST Research Internship
A research internship at OIST gives students experience working in a research environment directed by OIST faculty. The programme is intended for applicants who need more research experience and are interested in joining OIST’s PhD Program later.
The internship duration can be a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 6 months within one listed internship period. For the Spring 2027 round, the internship period is between April 1st, 2027 and September 30th, 2027.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants are eligible to apply for the Research Internship at OIST if they meet the stated academic conditions.
Eligible applicants include:
• Students currently enrolled in their last two years of a bachelor’s degree
• Students enrolled in any year of a master’s degree
• Students from universities, colleges, junior colleges, and vocational schools in Japan or overseas
• Applicants who have graduated with a bachelor’s or master’s degree
• Applicants who will be in the final two years of a bachelor’s degree by the start of the proposed internship duration
Currently enrolled students must have approval from their home institution. The academic background of applicants should also be appropriate to their desired host unit or units at OIST.
Current or graduated PhD students who wish to collaborate with OIST are directed to other opportunities such as workshops or careers at OIST.
Insurance Requirement for Some Interns
Research interns who belong to a Japanese university or institution must prepare and bring their own insurance if accepted to the OIST Research Internship Program.
The acceptable insurance combination stated by OIST is Gakkensai and Gakkenbai, or other insurance with similar coverage.
Required Documents
Applicants must prepare all required documents in English, save them as PDF files, and upload them to the application website.

• Recommendation letter
• Passport

• English Proficiency Score, optional
For transcripts and diplomas, applicants must upload scanned copies of their current academic transcript and any other transcript from a past degree, along with completed diplomas where applicable.
An unofficial transcript or other record of grades may be uploaded. If transcripts are not written in English, an English explanation is required.
Applicants who have not graduated and do not have a diploma yet should upload a certificate of enrollment, preferably showing the expected graduation date.
Statement of Purpose
The Statement of Purpose must be no more than 400 words or 2500 characters.
It should address:
• How OIST and the desired research unit or units fit the applicant’s current expertise and skill set
• What the applicant hopes to accomplish at OIST
• How a research internship at OIST fits the applicant’s overall career plans or aspirations
If applicants are interested in multiple research units, they should briefly explain their interest and fit for each unit within one statement.
Recommendation Letter
Applicants must submit 1 to 3 recommendation letters in English.
The letters must come from professorial-level faculty who know the applicant and can describe their academic potential as a researcher. Letters from lab members or postdocs are not eligible.
Applicants may submit their application only after at least one recommendation letter is received in the application system. OIST does not accept direct recommendation submissions from applicants.

Passport and ID Photo
The application system requires applicants to provide their passport number and upload a scan of the passport photo page.
Applicants from outside Japan must have a valid passport for travel to Japan. If applicants do not have a passport at the time of application, they may upload another government-issued identification document instead.
Applicants must also upload a recent photo taken within the last three months. The photo must show the face from the front in standard passport orientation.
English Proficiency Score
An English Proficiency Score such as IELTS or TOEFL is not required for the Research Internship application.
However, applicants may upload an English proficiency score if they believe it will strengthen their application.
Application Fee
The application fee for the Research Internship Program is 3,000 JPY.
The fee is not refundable under any circumstances. Fee waivers are not offered for personal financial situations at this time.
OIST states that applicants who have trouble paying due to international sanctions on their country should use the Contact Us page and choose “Research Internship” as the reason for contact.

OIST only accepts application documents online. Applicants must create an account to apply for the programme.
The application can be completed in one session, or applicants may save their progress and return later to finish it.
Applicants should:
