The AKS Graduate Fellowship 2026 in South Korea is a fully funded, six-month research fellowship at the Graduate School of Korean Studies, Academy of Korean Studies. It supports international graduate students who want to conduct research in Korean studies, and it also includes a monthly stipend, airfare support, free dormitory accommodation, and free Korean language courses.

Program Overview

The AKS Graduate Fellowship is a non-degree research fellowship. It is intended for graduate students who want to deepen their knowledge of Korea through research at GSKS. The fellowship period runs from 1 September 2026 to 28 February 2027, and extension is not allowed. The program will select up to 5 fellows.

Eligibility

Applicants must meet all of the following conditions as of 1 September 2026:

• Be either a foreign national or a Korean national who completed education outside Korea
• Be enrolled in a Master’s or doctoral degree program at an overseas university, or have completed coursework and be in ABD status in a Master’s degree program at an overseas university
• Have a research topic related to Korea or Korean studies
• Preferably have Korean language proficiency
• Not be a previous AKS Graduate Fellow, because former fellows are not eligible to apply again
• Note that ABD students in a doctoral degree program are not eligible

How to Apply

Applications must be submitted online at gradaks.recruiter.co.kr. Applicants must also select one AKS professor whose specialty matches their research topic, because applications without a professor selection will be disqualified. The personal statement should be about 2 pages, and the research plan should be about 3 pages. Both can be written in Korean or English.

• ID photo

All certificates must be in Korean or English. If they are in another language, they must be translated into Korean or English and notarized. Failure to submit documents 1 to 6 leads to disqualification.

Deadline and Result Schedule

The online application period runs from 27 April 2026, 10:00 KST, to 8 May 2026, 17:00 KST. The selection result will be announced on 26 June 2026 at 17:00 KST.
